This side event will provide a global update of CCS projects as well as explore the challenges of CCS technology from a developing country perspective, especially in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region. The discussion will focus on the prevailing suite of CCS projects and their support needs (including the role of the Clean Development Mechanism) as well as their technological challenges and risks.
This side event will provide a global update of CCS projects as well as focus on the propensity and sufficiency of the UNFCCC’s current and future arrangements to support clean energy options such as CCS. It will explore the challenges and opportunities of the UNFCCC’s architecture to facilitate in particular a wide scale deployment of CCS, considered by many governments, leading intergovernmental organisations and global commentators as being necessary to drive large scale mitigation outcomes particularly in developing countries.
Shenhua Ningxia Coal-to-liquids (CTL) is in the early stages of development for a CCS scheme and the proponent is considering various CO2 storage options, including the use of CO2 for enhanced oil recovery. Carbon dioxide of approximately 2 Mtpa could be captured from a large CTL plant in Ningxia Province, China. The project would be anticipated to have a start-up date in the 2020s.
This demonstration facility is examining the effectiveness of CO2 injection for the purposes of enhanced oil recovery (EOR) in low permeability reservoirs in the Jilin oil field in northeast China. Carbon dioxide injection tests began in 2006 and demonstration testing has evolved in four phases since that time. Injection capacity is now in the range of 300,000 – 350,000 tonnes per annum of CO2. Cumulative CO2 injection of one million tonnes was reached in the first half of 2016.
Sinopec Qilu Petrochemical CCS plans to retrofit a CO2 capture system to an existing coal/coke water slurry gasification unit at a fertiliser plant in Zibo City, Shangdong Province, China. The facility is planned to be constructed in two phases to reach a full capture capacity of 0.5 Mtpa of CO2 by around the 2021 timeframe. The CO2 stream would be transported by pipeline to the Shengli oilfield for enhanced oil recovery.
Shanxi International Energy Group CCUS is in the early stage of development and the proponents are investigating potential transportation routes and storage sites. The development would involve the construction of a new super-critical, coal-fired power plant with oxy-fuel combustion technology in Taiyuan City, Shanxi Province, China. The facilities could capture around 2 Mtpa of CO2 with an anticipated start-up timeline in the 2020s.
Caledonia Clean Energy is examining construction of a new natural gas feedstock power plant (The Caledonia Plant) with integrated CO2 capture facilities located in the vicinity of Grangemouth, Central Scotland. Carbon dioxide capture capacity would be around 3 Mtpa. The CO2 would be transported via a network of existing re-purposed pipeline infrastructure for dedicated geological storage below a depleted gas field in the North Sea off Scotland. Start-up would be in the 2020's.
