Capture type:
Post-Combustion
Transport type:
Onshore to onshore pipeline 100 km
Storage type:
Enhanced Oil Recovery

Location: Southeastern Saskatchewan, Canada

Proponent: SaskPower Inc.

Technical aspects

  • As part of a retrofit of SaskPower's Boundary Dam 3 unit, carbon dioxide (CO2) capture facilities will be installed to capture up to 1 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) of CO2 starting early 2014.
  • Capture will be post-combustion and use Cansolv chemical solvent.
  • Captured CO2 in excess of that to be delivered to oil fields for enhanced oil recovery will be injected into a deep saline formation as part of the Aquistore Project.

Key Deliverables

  • A final investment decision was made in April 2011 by the Saskatchewan Government.
  • CO2 capture is expected to start in first quarter of 2014.

The project will be among the first projects globally to integrate capture and storage associated with power generation.
