Capture type:
Pre-Combustion
Transport type:
75 km Onshore to onshore pipeline
Storage type:
Enhanced Oil Recovery

Location: Kemper County, Mississippi, United States of America

Proponent: Mississippi Power (Southern Company)

Technical aspects

  • 582 MW net coal-based integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) power plant.
  • 3.5 million tonnes per annum of carbon dioxide (CO2) is expected to be captured.
  • The project would utilise two transport integrated gasifier trains, each with its own coal feed and ash handling systems.
  • CO2 is transported via pipeline for onshore enhanced oil recovery.

Key Deliverables

  • Financial investment decision taken in May 2010.
  • Construction commenced June 2010.
  • Operation expected in 2014.
  • This project was one of two selected in the second round of the US Department of Energy's Clean Coal Power Initiative. It received US$270 million in funding to demonstrate advanced power generation systems using IGCC technology.

This project highlights a technology - the transport gasifier - that has been used successfully for over 50 years in the petroleum refining industry. The transport gasifier is air-blown and has a fuel-flexible design projected to have higher efficiency and lower capital and operating costs than the currently available oxygen-blown entrained-flow gasifiers. The demonstration plant will generate electricity using Mississippi lignite.
