Project details

Proponent: Department of Primary Industries, Victorian Government

The CarbonNet CCS network, being developed by the Victorian Government, has the potential to be one of the world's first industrial-scale, multi-user foundation CCS networks, integrating multiple CCS projects and proponents across the entire CCS value chain within the next ten years, and progressively lowering barriers to entry for new participants. Initially sized to capture and store 1.2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per annum before 2020, the network will have the potential to rapidly scale up to support over 20 million tonnes per annum thereafter, and potentially further growth to service Australia's eastern seaboard.

CarbonNet was selected for funding consideration by the Commonwealth of Australia's CCS Flagship Program in 2010.

Focus of support

The Global CCS Institute is providing AU$2.3 million in support through the Institute's strategic partnership with the Clinton Climate Initiative. Funding will be used to define the roles of participants involved in a CCS network and to develop a business model and commercial structure for CarbonNet.

CarbonNet will also receive AU$240,000 to develop a detailed project plan to support the future development of a nationally consistent technical framework for the measurement, monitoring and verification (MMV) of geologically stored carbon dioxide. The Global CCS Institute will work with CarbonNet and the Australian Government Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism on developing the project plan. The full scope of this work will then be conducted as a collaborative exercise with key Australian CCS stakeholders.
