Capture type:
Pre-Combustion (incl. Gas Processing)
Transport type:
Onshore to onshore pipeline 256 km
Storage type:
Enhanced Oil Recovery
Location: Texas, United States of America
Proponent: Occidental Petroleum (operator), Sandridge Energy (gas supplier)
Technical aspects
Capture of carbon dioxide (CO2) from a natural gas processing plant in West Texas using Honeywell UOP's Selexol CO2capture technology.
The Century Plant has an operational CO2capture capacity of 8.4 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa).
The CO2 captured at the plant is transported by pipeline for enhanced oil recovery (EOR).
Key Deliverables
The first train of the plant has been in operation since the fourth quarter of 2010, with a capture capacity of 5 Mtpa of CO2.
The second train of the plant, which has a capacity of 3.4 Mtpa Mtpa of CO2, was completed in late 2012.
A new 260 km long pipeline was constructed from the plant, through McCamey, Texas, to the industry CO2 hub in Denver City, Texas.
Occidental Petroleum, along with Sandridge Energy, is operating a West Texas natural gas processing plant and related pipeline infrastructure that provides CO2 for use in EOR. The CO2 captured at the plant is being injected into the Kinder Morgan Permian delivery system. With a total CO2 capture capacity of 8.4 Mtpa, the Century plant is the largest single industrial source CO2 capture facility in North America.
