Agrium CO2 Capture with ACTL

Javascript is required to view this map.
Capture type:
Pre-Combustion
Transport type:
234 km Onshore to onshore pipeline
Storage type:
Enhanced Oil Recovery

Location: Alberta, Canada

Proponents: Agrium and Enhance Energy Inc.

Technical aspects

  • Retrofit of pre-combustion carbon dioxide (CO2) capture at an existing fertiliser plant producing ammonia.
  • Around 585,000 tonnes per annum of CO2 will be captured at the plant.
  • CO2 captured at the plant will be transported 234 km via Enhance Energy's Alberta Carbon Trunk Line (ACTL) pipeline for use in enhanced oil recovery.

Deliverables

  • Advanced negotiations for the off-take of CO2 are under way.
  • Enhance Energy has signed a Letter of Intent with Fairborne Energy Trust to jointly develop a CO2 EOR project at their Clive D2A and D3A fields in Central Alberta.
  • The pipeline is scheduled to be operational in 2013.
  • Construction of the CO2 capture unit has commenced and full-scale operation is expected to start in 2014.

The ACTL pipeline will also collect around 1.8 million tonnes per annum of CO2 captured from Northwest Upgrading's new build heavy oil upgrader refinery. Both the Agrium fertiliser plant and the Northwest Upgrading refinery are located in Alberta's Industrial Heartland. The ACTL pipeline has been designed to service additional capture and EOR sites in the future.
