Globally there are 12 large-scale integrated CCS projects in operation, with a further ten under construction. The 22 projects in operation or under construction represent an increase of more than 50 per cent since 2011. The total CO2 capture capacity of these 22 projects is expected to be around 40 million tonnes per annum. There are another 34 large-scale integrated projects in various stages of development planning, of which six may make a final investment decision over the course of 2014.

Large-scale integrated CCS projects (LSIPs) are defined as those which involve the capture, transport and storage of CO2 at a scale of:
- at least 800,000 tonnes of CO2 annually for a coal-based power plant, or
- at least 400,000 tonnes of CO2 annually for other emission-intensive industrial facilities (including natural gas-based power generation).
