TRANSPORTATION DISTANCE TO STORAGE SITE: Dependent on location of CO2 source and storage site - the distances to the primary Jingbian producing unit from the Yulin City and Jingbian Industrial Park capture sources are approximately 140 kilometres / 87 miles and 42 kilometres / 26 miles respectively.
The Yanchang Integrated Carbon Capture and Storage Demonstration Project is an industrial CCS project located in the Shaanxi Province of China. Yanchang Petroleum, through affiliates, is developing two CO2 capture sources (over 100 kilometres apart) with the captured CO2 to be used for enhanced oil recovery (EOR). The smaller scale capture source, already operational, is under the umbrella of the Yulin Coal Chemical Company, while the larger CO2 source, still to be operational, falls under the umbrella of the Yulin Energy Chemicals Company.
The gasification facilities of both host plants convert local coal into synthetic gas (syngas).
Yulin Coal Chemical Co. Ltd – This facility is the first coal-to-chemicals project invested into by Yanchang Petroleum and first produced methanol in 2011. The facility is designed to produce 200,000 tonnes of methanol per annum and 200,000 tonnes of acetic acid per annum (though capacity can be increased to 1 Mtpa of acetic acid and other products should demand eventuate). Carbon dioxide removal (including compression and liquefaction) facilities with a capacity of approximately 50,000 tonnes per annum were completed in late 2012 and supply high purity (liquefied) CO2 for use in EOR operations. Transport of the CO2 to the injection site at the Jingbian producing unit (a distance of over 100 kilometres) is by tanker trucks.
Yulin Energy Chemical Co. Ltd - A joint venture between Yanchang Petroleum and China National Coal Group Corporation, the company produces a range of chemical products at its large coal-to-chemical, gas chemical and petrochemical integrated Jingbian Industrial Park facility. This facility includes five processing units and produces 1.8 Mtpa of methanol, 0.6 Mtpa of methanol to olefin, 0.6 Mtpa of polyethylene and 0.6 Mtpa of polypropylene.
At this facility, a feasibility study has been undertaken for CO2 removal (including compression and liquefaction) facilities with a capacity of 0.36 Mtpa. Once completed, transport of the CO2 to the injection site at the Jingbian producing unit (a distance of around 42 kilometres) and to the planned Xingzichuan CO2 injection site (a distance of around 105 kilometres) would be by pipeline.
Captured CO2 from the Yulin Coal Chemical Co. Ltd facility is primarily for use in EOR operations in the Jingbian producing unit (Qiaojiawa oil zone) of the Yanchang oil field in the Ordos Basin in central China. Carbon dioxide pilot injection into the Qiaojiawa oil zone began in September 2012. Up to the end of 2016, the five well groups had cumulative CO2 injection of approximately 68,000 tonnes.
The Chang6 is the reservoir layer for CO2-EOR operations. It ranges in thickness from 105-150 metres, with an average thickness of almost 130 metres. Chang6 is further divided into depositional cycles from 61 to 63, of which Chang62 is the focus CO2 injection layer (with an average thickness of around 20 metres). Reservoir depth is at around 1,550 metres (5,000 feet). The cap rock of sandstone and mudstone (Chang4+5) is extensive with an average thickness of 85 metres.
Pilot injection was applied to the Yougou 38 well of the Wuqi oil field in mid-2014. Cumulative CO2 injection into the Wuqi oil unit is estimated at approximately 20,000 tonnes. Reservoir depth in the Wuqi oil unit is approximately 2,000 metres / 6,500 feet.
This project was noted as a cooperation project in the US-China Joint Presidential Statement on Climate Change in September 2015.
