CCUS in the Indian Cement Industry: A Review of CO2 Hubs and Storage Facilities

16th July 2024

On June 25, the Global CCS Institute, alongside the Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA), the Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM), organised an insightful webinar unpacking CCUS in the Indian Cement Industry. The webinar was aligned with the release of a co-authored report on the topic, which was kindly funded by the Global CCS Foundation.

India’s economic growth has been substantial over the last two decades, much of which can be attributed to rapid industrialisation. India’s cement industry is the second largest globally and has played an important role in the country’s economic ascent. Concurrently, tackling rising CO2 emissions in the country, 5.8% of which can be attributed to cement production, will be key, and CCUS can play a central role in that effort.

Watch a recording of the event, which assesses:

  • Opportunities for CCS to decarbonise the cement industry in India.
  • Subsurface data gaps, which will be important to address in India – along with other countries with emerging economies – where CCS can play a critical role in decarbonising industry
  • Potential CCUS hub ecosystems in India
  • Transport and storage costs through a techno-economic analysis

Speakers:

  • Claude Lorea, Cement, Innovation and ESG Director – Global Cement and Concrete Association (moderator)
  • Bernardene Smith, Principal Policy, Regulation and Commercial – Global CCS Institute
  • Abdul Al Ameer, Co-lead – CEM CCUS
  • Thomas Guillot, CEO – Global Cement and Concrete Association
  • Kaustubh Phadke, General Manager, India - Global Cement and Concrete Association
  • Jerred Thomas, Senior Carbon Capture Technologies Lead – Global CCS Institute
  • Mojtaba Seyyedi, Senior Storage Lead – Global CCS Institute
