Global CCS Institute – COP 29 Side Events
29th November 2024
Between the 11 November and the 22 November 2024, the Institute attended COP 29 as an Observer organisation and hosted several side events.
The available recordings, along with details of Institute's side events, can be found below.
COP 29 Side Events:
Event: Financing Carbon Management Projects | IETA Pavilion
About: Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is a critical technology needed to reduce emissions from carbon intensive industries, and countries and companies are moving CCS deployment forward in response to climate mitigation goals and supported by enabling policies. The business case for CCS continues to strengthen but greater participation from private capital would facilitate project deployment at scale. This event will provide perspectives on global CCS activity to date including the outcomes of enabling policies around the world, and what more is needed to further accelerate CCS deployment. The panel will also highlight the opportunities for private capital to participate in the financing of CCS projects.
Speakers:
- MUFG Bank – Yukimi Shimura, Managing Director, Sustainable Business Division
- IETA – Katie Sullivan, Managing Director
- The Administrative Center for China’s Agenda 21 – Dr. Zhang Xian, Ministry of Science and Technology
- Holcim – Pavan Chilukuri, VP - Global Head of CCUS
- Global CCS Institute – Guloren Turan, Chief Impact Officer (moderator)
Event: Scaling Up CCS in the Global South | IETA Pavilion
About: Momentum around carbon capture and storage (CCS) as a climate solution is taking off globally, including in the Global South. Emerging economies with booming industrial hubs are turning to CCS technologies as a tool to support national and regional climate action goals. Hosted by the Global CCS Institute, this event will unpack the latest developments, knowledge sharing opportunities, financing needs and international collaboration.
Speakers:
- Zhang Xian, Director ACCA21, China
- Sadesh Sookraj, International Finance Corporation
- Nabil Al Bulushi CDT, Petrolium Development Oman
- Tim Dixon, Director and General Manager, IEA GHG
Event: Advancing CCUS in the Cement Sector | Global Cement and Concrete Association
About: Cement and concrete are essential for the world – whether it’s delivering safe homes, modern transport networks, critical infrastructure such as clean water and the transition to clean energy, as well as building more resilient communities in the face of a changing planet. However, the cement sector accounts for around 7% of global CO2 emissions. Carbon management is a vital decarbonisation lever for the industry – 36% of the industry’s net zero commitments will come from CCUS. This event will examined the industry’s current progress and plans, and the main challenges for CCUS deployment, CO2 transport and storage infrastructure, enabling policies and more.
Speakers:
- Thomas Guillot, CEO, GCCA
- Jarad Daniels, Chief Executive Officer, Global CCS Institute
- Katherine Romanak, Research Scientist, University of Texas, Austin
- Winston Beck, Head of Government Affairs, Heidelberg Materials
- Honourable Rebecca Schulz, Minister of Environment and Protected Areas, Government of Alberta
- Dr. Chana Poomee, Chairman, Thai Cement Manufacturing Association (TCMA)
Event: Ramping Up Industrial Decarbonisation Through CCS Deployment | Global Cement and Concrete Association
About: Carbon capture and storage, along with upstream methane controls, has an essential role to play in capturing emissions from key industries that have few or no other mitigation options. Global industrial sources—such as the production of cement, iron and steel, and certain chemicals—have inherent CO₂ emissions in their production processes and account for approximately one-fifth of all CO₂ emissions. CCS provides a proven, scalable solution for addressing greenhouse gas emissions from these industries, making it a critical tool in the global climate solution toolbox. This panel addressed questions such as: what are the key prerequisites for deploying large-scale industrial CCS projects? How can policies help bridge the shortfall between the carbon price or incentives and the costs of capturing and storing CO₂? And what are the implications of tariffs and carbon border adjustments for industrial decarbonization?
Speakers:
- Dr. Vanessa Chan, Chief Commercialization Officer for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and Director of the Office of Technology Transitions
- Xiaoliang Yan, China Country Manager, Global CCS Institute
- Pavan Chilukuri, Vice President/Group Head of CCUS, Holcim
- Lee Beck, Senior Director Europe, Clean Air Task Force (CATF)
