Onshore CO2 Storage Developments in Europe
27th September 2024
On 19 September, the Institute hosted a webinar on onshore CO2 storage development in Europe. You can now watch this webinar to gain insights into the ongoing efforts and future potential of onshore CO2 storage.
There is continued momentum across Europe regarding carbon capture and storage (CCS) as a key climate technology. While offshore CO2 storage has been instrumental in supporting CCS project development in Europe, onshore storage options is also being recognized as critical to driving CCS and climate ambitions. Several countries have noted the importance of onshore CO2 storage, including Denmark, which recently awarded three onshore exploration licenses. The development of onshore CO2 storage sites could have facilitated access to CCS for inland emission sources, including small emitters, and potentially reduced the overall cost of CCS by lowering the CO2 transport component.
For many European countries, the availability of onshore storage is seen as key to the successful deployment of CCS. Hosted by the Global CCS Institute, this webinar examined the supportive regulatory frameworks and policies that enabled onshore storage development in Denmark, and assessed the particulars of the projects and exploration efforts underway in the country. The event also further explored the potential future state of onshore CO2 storage in Europe more broadly.
