이산화탄소(CO₂)를 지하에 저장하는 것은 최근에 개발된 기술이 아니다. 산업 규모에서 사용되어 온 기술이다. 실제로, 세계 각지 이산화탄소 및 기타 기체를 저장할 수 있으며, 수 세기 동안 주입된 CO₂를 저장 가능할 것이라 전문가들이 판단한 지질학적 시스템이 존재한다. 이 지질학적 시스템은 대기로부터 온실가스를 제거함으로써 기후변화를 완화시킬 수 있을 것이다.
