Leakage risk assessment of the In Salah CO2 storage project: applying the certification framework in a dynamic context
Leakage risk assessment of the In Salah CO2 storage project: applying the certification framework in a dynamic context

The In Salah Gas project at Krechba, in the Sahara Desert of Algeria, is the world’s largest on-shore saline-formation geologic carbon sequestration (GCS) project. This paper describes a simple risk assessment approach for evaluating CO2 and brine leakage risk at the site. In this report the authors describe an application of the certification framework (CF) risk assessment approach over two different stages. Results show that the assessment of likelihood of various leakage scenarios increased as more information became available, while assessment of impact stayed the same. Ongoing mitigation, modelling, and monitoring of the injection process is recommended.
