Establishing Leadership in Bringing Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage to Scale

13th March 2025

Read this latest publication titled "Establishing Leadership in Bringing Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage to Scale", co-written by experts with the Global CCS Institute.

Carbon capture, utilisation and storage is a key lever that is important to industrial emissions reductions. Countries that have significant emissions and the capacity to develop mitigation technologies are uniquely situated to lead the deployment on CCUS and drive a rapid scale up.

Leveraging the United Arab Emirates as a compelling case study, this paper assesses how key barriers tied to CCUS deployment, such as societal acceptance, financing and application scope, can be addressed.

Applying a sociotechnical lens, the publication further unpacks:

  • Existing obstacles tied to deployment related to CCUS readiness and investment
  • Lessons and opportunities from the UAE, highlighting key policy frameworks
  • The duty and role of fossil-fuel exporting economies to drive the CCUS scale-up

and much more.

This paper, initially published in the journal for Energy Research & Social Science, was authored by the Institute's Business Development Lead, Maryem El Farsaoui, and the Institute's Head of MEA Region, Dr. Mohammad Abu Zahra, alongside Steve Griffiths, Vice Chancellor of Research with the American University of Sharjah, and Joao M. Uratani, Doctoral Research Fellow at the University of Sussex.
