About the CMC
To keep global warming below 1.5°C, the world must rapidly scale up carbon management. The Carbon Management Challenge (CMC) is an international initiative driving the deployment of carbon capture, removal, use, and storage technologies to address CO₂ emissions at scale.
Launched in 2023 by 11 founding governments at the Major Economies Forum, the Challenge now includes 23 participating countries and regions, with more joining. Together, they are working to build a pipeline of carbon management projects that, by 2030, can collectively manage 1 gigatonne of CO₂ per year.
The Global CCS Institute serves as the secretariat to the CMC, helping facilitate its operations and supporting global coordination.
What the CMC does
- Sets national and collective goals for carbon management deployment
- Promotes climate finance and public-private partnerships
- Tracks project progress and fosters shared learning
- Prioritises meaningful public engagement and environmental co-benefits
The CMC is organised around three workstreams focused on developing country finance, project tracking, and strategic communications, led by participant governments from every major region.
