Major CCS Projects in Scotland Set to Move Forward Following UK Government Funding Announcement

As part of the 2025 Spending Review released on 11 June 2025, the UK Government has confirmed plans to allocate development funding to two CCS projects in Scotland: Acorn and Viking.

Both initiatives are part of the UK’s track-2 cluster sequencing process and are expected to make significant contributions to the country’s decarbonisation efforts and support the transition of Scottish industry towards low-carbon solutions.

In addition, the 2025 Spending Review outlines plans to allocate funding to fill the storage capacity of the East Coast Cluster and HyNet Clusters, which were awarded £21.7 billion government support in October 2024.

The continued support for CCS highlighted in the 2025 Spending Review confirms the UK’s commitment to deploying the technology at scale and harnessing its potential to help deliver the country’s net-zero future.

A final investment decision is expected to be taken this Parliament, subject to project readiness and affordability.
