U.S. Announces New Measures to Strengthen CO2 Pipeline Safety

28th May 2022

Yesterday, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) announced new measures to strengthen its safety oversight of CO2 pipelines around the United States.

Presently in the U.S. the CO2 pipeline network spans around 4,500 miles, a small fraction of the total pipeline network (3 million miles). PHMSA's announcement of updates to safety standards and emergency preparedness is a good sign and an acknowledgement of the growing importance of CO2 pipelines. We know that we need to rapidly scale carbon capture and storage in the U.S. in order to meet global climate goals, so increased attention to the infrastructure needed to facilitate CCS is most welcome.
