Norway and Switzerland Sign Groundbreaking Bilateral Agreement on CCS and CDR

On 17 June, Norway and Switzerland signed an agreement aimed at enhancing international cooperation in the field of carbon capture and storage (CCS) and carbon dioxide removal (CDR) under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. The initiative lays the conditions to enable the cross-border transport and permanent geological storage of CO2 between the two countries, as well as the transfer of mitigation outcomes under Art. 6 of the Paris Agreement.

The announcement demonstrates the commitment of Norway and Switzerland to the advancement of CCS and CDR solutions to meet their net-zero targets and marks a crucial step towards the creation of a sustainable commercial market for CCS and CDR in the region.

The bilateral agreement was signed by the two countries in the framework of the Longship Launch Event in Oslo and builds on the Declaration of intent signed by Norway and Switzerland in May 2024.

As a result of the initiative, a coalition of companies has already announced pilot activities under the bilateral agreement.
