Joined the institute in March 2026 as Head of Partnerships & Consortia within the Global Research and Analysis team. He will be based in the UK from June of 2026 after an initial period in Calgary, Canada.
Neil is a professional geoscientist with nearly 40 years of experience, focused primarily since 2006 on CO2 geological storage and CCS. Prior to joining the institute, he served as President and CEO of Carbon Management Canada (CMC), overseeing operations at the Newell County Field Research Station and leading successful funding applications for the development of advanced storage monitoring technology and CCS training and education.
Previous jobs included working for the British Columbia Geological Survey, the Energy & Environmental Research Centre (EERC), the Global CCS Institute from 2014 to 2016, the Petroleum Technology Research Centre (PTRC), the IEA Greenhouse Gas R&D Programme and EON UK. While working at PTRC, managed the last 2 years and final deliverables of the IEAGHG Weyburn-Midale Program, and served as Acting CEO from 2013 to 2014. At EERC, managed the PCOR Partnership deliverables, served as Principal Investigator for CarbonSAFE Nebraska, and led the successful funding application for the PCOR Regional Initiative. Also served as an Associate Editor of the International Journal of Greenhouse Gas Control from 2016 to 2020. Recipient of the PCOR Partnership Pioneer Award in 2015.
He holds a Masters’ degree in Applied Environmental Geology from Cardiff University (1998) and Bachelors’ degree in Geology from the University of Southampton (1987).
