On 2 June 2025, the Global CCS Institute signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Al Akhawayn University (AUI) with an aim to further advance carbon capture and storage (CCS) in Morocco and the broader Africa region.
As part of the MoU, the Institute and AUI – Morocco’s leading liberal arts University – will work jointly on a number of collaborative initiatives, including delivering on capacity building needs for CCS and supporting dialogue across key stakeholders involved in policy and industry development.
As a leading think tank, the Institute also aims to lend its expertise by collaborating with AUI on joint thought leadership initiatives, contributing to relevant and pressing carbon management topics.
The MoU was signed on the grounds of Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane, Morocco with Dr. Mohammad Abu Zahra, the Institute’s Head of MEA Region, and Maryem El Farsaoui, the Institute’s MEA Business Development Lead, present, alongside AUI’s President, Dr. Amine Bensaid, Professor Abdelghani El Asli and Professor Salah Al Majeed.
While this is the first MOU signed between the two parties, AUI and the Institute have previously worked alongside together, delivering workshops on carbon management to Morocco-based stakeholders. The Institute and AUI are aligned with the mission to pursue CCS as an avenue to support decarbonisation efforts, and we look forward to building on this partnership over the months and years to come.
