Selected Advanced CCS Projects in Japan
A range of CCS projects are advancing feasibility. A new financing mechanism is being considered and targeted for implementation from 2026.
Japan positions CCS as a central pillar of its decarbonization strategy under the Green Transformation (GX) framework. The 7th Strategic Energy Plan identifies CCUS as essential for decarbonizing hard-to-abate sectors while supporting energy security and economic growth. Japan aims to launch CCS projects by 2030 and expand capacity to up to 240 million tons per annum by 2050.
A comprehensive regulatory framework covering permitting, long-term liability, and monitoring is under development. As of June 2024, nine advanced CCS projects are in feasibility stages. A financial support mechanism is being considered to bridge cost gaps, targeted for implementation from 2026. Meanwhile, R&D and CO₂ transport initiatives are advancing steadily.
