New fact sheet explains how oil recovery can support US carbon capture

Global CCS Institute outlines how using captured CO in oil recovery can help offset capture costs and provide infrastructure for permanent storage.

 

The Global CCS Institute today published a new fact sheet highlighting how using captured carbon dioxide (CO₂) in oil recovery can help offset capture costs and support development of carbon capture and storage (CCS) infrastructure in the United States.

The publication, CO-enhanced oil recovery with CCS: the basics, examines how the approach works, where it may support deployment and how permanent underground storage is measured and verified.

The publication comes ahead of the Institute’s participation in New York Climate Week, including an invitation-only event on CCS finance on 22 September.

CO₂-enhanced oil recovery with CCS uses CO₂ captured from sources such as industrial facilities and power plants, alongside monitoring and accounting to verify permanent storage.

Jessica Marcus, Head of Americas at the Global CCS Institute, said:

“In the United States, there are circumstances where selling captured CO₂ for use in oil recovery can give industrial capture projects a source of revenue. This helps offset capture costs and supports investment in the infrastructure these projects need. Ultimately, this can accelerate wider CCS deployment.”

The fact sheet identifies key enablers for broader deployment of CO₂-enhanced oil recovery with CCS, including opportunities to connect industrial sources of captured CO₂ with suitable oil fields, use existing wells and facilities where appropriate, and develop shared transport networks. These networks can also connect captured CO₂ to dedicated storage sites, where storage is the sole objective and no oil is produced.

During CO₂-enhanced oil recovery, some injected CO₂ remains trapped underground. CO₂ that returns to the surface with the oil is separated, treated and reinjected. Monitoring, reporting and verification establish how much CO₂ is permanently stored.

“A clear commercial case needs to be matched by a clear account of the CO₂ stored,” Marcus said. “Our fact sheet explains both the potential opportunity and the conditions that need to be understood when assessing individual projects.”
