Global CCS Institute – COP 27 Side Events

11th November - 17th November 2022

Between the 6th and the 18th of November 2022, the Institute will be attending COP 27 as an Observer organization, and host various side events during week 1 and week 2. Institute's representatives will also be taking part in many other COP 27 side events as speakers.

A current schedule of the events that the Institute is hosting or speaking at can be found below.

COP 27 Side Events Organised by the Global CCS Institute:

Carbon Management and Industrial Decarbonisation: Cement, Steel and Beyond

Part I: Carbon Management and Industrial Decarbonisation: Steel, Energy and Beyond

Date & Time: 11 November 2022, 14:30 – 15:30
Location: COP 27 Conference (Blue Zone), Bellona Pavilion, Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt

With energy intensive industries pursuing ambitious climate targets, carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology is expected to play a strong role along that journey. Industries, such as steel, shipping, and cement , have said CCS  is a required technology in their net-zero transition. Join the Global CCS Institute at COP 27 as we speak to industry and policy experts on climate change mitigation and the value of CCS as it relates to industrial decarbonisation.

Speakers:

  • Jon Christopher Knudsen, Chief Commercial Officer, Aker Carbon Capture
  • Andrew Purvis, Director of Sustainable Manufacturing, World Steel
  • Catherine Raw, Managing Director, SSE Thermal
  • Bo Cerup-Simonsen , CEO, Zero Carbon Shipping (TBC)
  • Guloren Turan, General Manager of Advocacy, Global CCS institute (Moderator)

Part II -Carbon Management and Industrial Decarbonisation: Cement

Date & Time: 11 November 2022, 15:30 – 16:30
Location: COP 27 Conference (Blue Zone), Bellona Pavilion, Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt

With its strong durability, cement is one the most widely used material in the world. Although its reliability for building long-lasting and safe infrastructure is proven, cement production accounts for around 7% of global CO2  emissions and requires CO2 mitigation to ensure that climate targets are reached. Join the Global CCS Institute as we host discussions with experts in the cement and concrete industry, alongside policy experts, as they unpack the ambitious steps that are being taken to support a low-carbon transition, and the role carbon capture and storage will play in decarbonising cement production.

Speakers:

  • Dominik von Achten, CEO, Heidelberg Materials
  • Brad Crabtree, Assistant Secretary, US Department of Energy, Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management
  • Claude Lorea, ESG Director, Global Cement and Concrete Association
  • Jarad Daniels, CEO, Global CCS Institute (Moderator)

Scaling up Engineered Carbon Removal

Date & Time: 14 November 2022, 13:30 – 15:00
Location: COP 27 Conference (Blue Zone), IETA Pavilion, Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt

With net-zero targets rapidly approaching, proven climate solutions will need to be fully realised to avoid the catastrophic impacts of climate change. Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) aims to reduce the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere, either through nature-based or technological means, subsequently supporting climate goals as the green transition gets steadily underway. Join us at COP 27 as we host discussions on the value of CDR on the road to net-zero.

  • Julio Friedmann, Carbon Direct
  • Anna Dubowik, Negative Emissions Platform
  • Steve Kelly, 1PointFive International
  • Eli Mitchell-Larson, Carbon Gap
  • Jarad Daniels, Global CCS Institute

The Role of Financial Organisations and Carbon Markets in Accelerating CCS Deployment

Date & Time: 15 November 2022, 12:00 – 13:30
Location: COP 27 Conference (Blue Zone), IETA Pavilion, Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt

To reach net-zero climate targets by 2050, carbon capture and storage will need to play its role and abate around 6 gigatonnes of CO2 per year according to the IEA's World Energy Outlook. This will require a significant scale-up of the current fleet of CCS facilities. While avenues to financing CCS projects are on the rise, there will need to be a rapid acceleration as it relates to enabling a stronger investment environment for CCS. Join us at COP 27 as we speak to policy experts on the value of CCS and private and public sector financing towards the technology.

  • Dirk Forrister, IETA
  • Maris Densmore, American Carbon Registry
  • Esther Badiola, European Investment Bank
  • Fatih Yilmaz, KAPSARC
  • Guloren Turan, Global CCS Institute

Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage in China: Progress and Opportunities

Date & Time: 16 November 2022, 14:00-16:00
Location: COP 27 Conference (Blue Zone), China Pavilion, Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt

The year 2022 saw remarkable progress in China’s CCUS development. In 2022, China’s first integrated million-tonne CCUS project, owned by SINOPEC, commenced operation. Huaneng’ s 1.5 Mtpa coal-fired power CCUS project is moving to the stage of construction. CNPC announced to begin injecting up to 5 Mtpa CO2 from 2025. Join the Global CCS Institute at COP 27 as we will cohost the discussions with China CCUS Association on the progress and opportunities of CCUS in China. Our speakers include China’s Ministry of Ecology and Environment, ACCA21, CNPC, China Resources Power, IEA, GCCSI, OGCI, UCL and more.
