CO2 Infrastructure Projects Listed Among the 41 Cross-border Energy Infrastructure Projects Awarded Funding Under the CEF-E Programme
4th February 2025
On 30 January, the European Commission announced the results of the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) funding call launched in April 2024. Nearly €1.25 billion has been allocated to 41 cross-border energy infrastructure projects, related to electricity, hydrogen, and CO2 infrastructure.
The projects selected obtained the status of Projects of Common Interest (PCIs) and Projects of Mutual Interest (PMIs) in 2024 under the Trans-European Networks for Energy (TEN-E) policy framework. These projects will help create an energy infrastructure network across the EU and cross-border interconnections with non-EU member states, while also significantly contributing to the decarbonisation efforts of the Union and the countries outside of the EU involved in such initiatives.
Of budget, €250 million will be granted to nine preparatory studies and three projects in CO2 infrastructure (namely the Prinos storage facility in Northern Greece, the North Sea L10 CO2 storage facility on the Dutch continental shelf and the Norne CO2 facility in Denmark).
The announcement confirms the EU’s intention to support the development of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), in line with the objectives outlined by the European Commission in the EU Industrial Carbon Management Strategy. The selected projects are also expected to support the aspirations set in the Net-Zero Industry Act and contribute to the 2030 target of 50 million tonnes of annual CO2 injection capacity.
The next CEF Energy call for proposals for energy infrastructure is planned for 2025.
