U.S. DOE Awards $44.5 Million to Advance US Carbon Transport, Storage, and Community Engagement

20th August 2024

This month, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (FECM) announced the selection of nine university and industry-led regional partnerships to receive $44.5 million in funding to advance commercial-scale CCS deployment in the United States. The selected Regional Initiative Technical Assistance Partnership (RITAP) projects will build on the knowledge and experience gained from past and current DOE research and Regional Initiatives addressing challenges and opportunities for permanent storage of carbon dioxide in geologic basins.

Under the management of the DOE’s National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL), the RITAP projects will provide technical, informational, and educational assistance to stakeholders involved in DOE and private sector-based carbon transport and storage projects in the United States. To achieve this, RITAP projects will partner with experts with extensive technical, managerial, regulatory, and business experience specific to carbon transport and storage, and provide affected community stakeholders with objective, unbiased technical assistance specific to the project region.

Brad Crabtree, Assistant Secretary for Fossil Energy and Carbon Management, said in a press release, “By providing valuable public information and tools, these interdisciplinary partnerships will advance the deployment of basin-scale carbon transport and storage that will enable reductions in carbon dioxide emissions throughout the U.S. economy.”

RITAP support will focus on improving project monitoring and community engagement while reducing costs, risks, and permitting timelines within each region. As part of the application process, selected project teams prepared community benefits plans in alignment with the Justice40 Initiative for localities where the projects will be deployed.

The selected project teams are:

  • Battelle Memorial Institute in Columbus, Ohio
  • Board of Trustees of the Leland Stanford Junior University in Stanford, California
  • Carbon Solutions LLC in Okemos, Michigan
  • Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas
  • University of North Dakota Energy & Environmental Research Center in Grand Forks, North Dakota
  • The University of Texas at Austin in Austin, Texas
  • The University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah
  • University of Wyoming in Laramie, Wyoming
  • Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan
