U.S. DOE Releases Principles of Guidance for Responsible Development of Carbon Management Projects
9th August 2024
This week the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (FECM) released the final version of its Responsible Carbon Management Initiative Principles as part of the pilot phase of the Department’s Responsible Carbon Management Initiative (RCMI). The ten Principles provide guidance to ensure high standards for carbon management projects in the areas of community and Tribal engagement, workforce development, environmental justice and stewardship, health and safety, emergency response, transparency, and long-term stewardship.
“The Responsible Carbon Management Initiative and its Principles encourage project developers to maximize the societal and environmental benefits of their carbon management projects, engage effectively with communities, and demonstrate transparency and accountability,” Assistant Secretary of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management, Brad Crabtree, said in a press release.
FECM solicited input from the public, DOE’s Office of Energy Justice and Equity, Office of Indian Energy, and Office of Energy Jobs and incorporated feedback and guidance into the final Principles.
Accompanying the announcement, FECM released additional resources related to each Principle, including research, best practices, and tools sourced broadly from relevant federal agencies, government organizations, and universities.
