Dr. Mohammad Abu Zahra joined the Institute in January 2022 as Head of Middle East Africa (MEA) region, bringing 18 years of deep experience and international expertise in the Carbon Capture field. Mohammad is also an experienced university professor and an associate editor for the International Journal of Greenhouse Gas Control.

Mohammad previously held positions as a project manager and senior process engineer. Previous responsibilities included the management of projects in carbon dioxide capture and CCS integrated systems, consultancy, chemical engineering, and process design.  Prior to joining the Institute, Mohammad led and organised the 2021 GHGT-15 conference hosted by Khalifah University , and established the first dedicated carbon capture research group in the UAE.

In his current role, Mohammad represents the Institute in the MENA region and assists regional stakeholders in establishing their CCS strategic direction. Mohammad is keen to educate on the importance of carbon capture and storage technology as well  support the implementation of large-scale projects and the advancement of carbon capture and storage technologies in the MENA region.

Mohammad holds a Bachelor degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Jordan, a Master of Process Design and Development  from the University of Twente and a PhD in Chemical Engineering-Process and Energy from Delft University of Technology.
