EU Green Week Partner Event – CCS and Climate Ambition: Assessing Europe’s Place in the Climate Policy Sphere

13th June 2023

On 5 June, the Global CCS Institute held an EU Green Week partner event assessing Europe’s place in the climate policy sphere.

The European Commission unveiled its Green Deal Industrial Plan, which aims to support the green transition and drive net-zero industries. The first pillar of the plan is a simpler regulatory framework that will accelerate strategic low-carbon initiatives, including carbon capture and storge technology. The proposed Net Zero Industry Act outlines a regulatory framework that would simplify and fast track permitting to scale up the deployment of clean technologies, including CCS.

Funding mechanisms in Europe are also catapulting CCS projects, including through the EU Innovation Fund that is supporting projects in countries such as Belgium, Sweden, Bulgaria, France, Iceland and Romania as well as State Aid efforts from the European Commission and national subsidy programmes which drive CCS projects in Denmark and the Netherlands.

Globally, governments abroad are also adopting ambitious climate policies, including over in the United States, where the federal government will mobilise $360 billion by 2032 to support clean energy transition through the Inflation Reduction Act. Despite funding commitments and policy and regulatory developments, implementational issues – particularly as they relate to storage permitting and building CO2 transport routes – still must be addressed, both in Europe and other regions where CCS is needed.

During the webinar, we took a closer look at Europe’s ambitious climate and CCS policies, and what steps can be taken to enhance CCS deployment initiatives.

Speakers:

  • European Commission – Chris Bolesta, CO2 Capture, Use and Storage Policy Lead
  • US Department of Energy, Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management – Adam Wong, Director for Strategic Engagement
  • CEMBUREAU-European Cement Association – Rob van der Meer, Industry Policy Director

The webinar was moderated by Guloren Turan, General Manager - Communications and Advocacy at the Global CCS Institute.
