United States to Rejoin the Paris Agreement
21st January 2021
US President Joe Biden has signed an executive order that will reinstate the United States in the international Paris Agreement. The order, signed on President Biden’s first day in office, will take thirty days to take effect.
President Biden has previously expressed support for carbon capture. While specific CCS policy measures have yet to be announced, the new Administration has listed the climate crisis as one of its top priorities with an aim to encourage “businesses to lead a clean energy revolution”.
The United States formally withdrew from the Paris Agreement in 2017. The reversal is one of 15 executives orders the new administration has moved forward with on its first day.
