Webinar: Telling the Norwegian CCS Story PART II – CCS: the path to a sustainable and emission-free cement industry

The Global CCS Institute in collaboration with Gassnova hosted the second webinar of its "Telling the Norwegian CCS Story" series. The second webinar presented Norcem's CCS project at their cement production facility in Brevik, in the South-Eastern part of Norway. This is one of the two industrial CO₂ sources in the Norwegian full-scale project, along with the Fortum Oslo Varme project (waste-to-energy plant). Norcem is part of the worldwide group HeidelbergCement.

The company has started to test different capture technologies at their Brevik plant since 2013. The current CCS project has the capacity to capture 400,000 tons of CO₂ per annum, which equals to 50 per cent of the plant’s CO₂ emissions. The CO₂ captured from the cement plant will be transported by ship to an onshore facility for intermediate storage and then piped out for storage in a geological formation under the seabed in the North Sea. The carbon capture plant will be integrated with the cement factory and will be the world’s first cement plant with full-scale carbon capture. The facility could be operational as of 2024. The Norwegian Government has allocated funding to the project for the FEED study, the last stage before final investment decision.

During the webinar, Per Brevik, Director Alternative Fuels and Sustainability at HeidelbergCement, provided an overview of the CCS project and highlighted the important opportunities for CCS in the cement industry.
