The Status of CCS in the UK Pt. II | Unpacking CCS Business Models in the UK: Power, Power BECCS and Greenhouse Gas Removals

29th February 2024

Type(s): Virtual

29 February 2024 |  14:00 GMT / 15:00 CET / 9:00 AM EST

Join the Global CCS Institute for the second of a three part series covering the status of CCS in the UK.

With carbon capture and storage (CCS) included in the UK’s climate action plans, and up to £20 billion pounds for its early deployment, the UK is taking a comprehensive approach to scale up CCS through curated business models.

The UK Government is taking steps to decarbonise power systems through the Dispatchable Power Agreement (DPA), which will incentvise investment in the technology and drive the scale-up of power CCS plants. A business model for large-scale power bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) projects is also in steady development.

The UK also has a demonstrated ambition to be a global leader in developing and deploying engineered greenhouse gas removals (GGRs), which balance residual emissions from hard-to-decarbonise sectors by removing CO2 from the atmphere. The GGR business model seeks to drive investment in a variety of GGR technologies such as Direct Air Carbon Capture and Storage (DACCS) and Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) and accelerate commercial deployment of these technologies by providing revenue support for negative emissions.

Join the Global CCS Institute as we speak with experts at the UK’s Department for Energy Security and Net Zero as we unpack the Dispatchable Power Agreement, Power BECCS, and the GGR business models that will enable CCS projects and clusters, as we inch towards net zero goals.

Speakers

  • Joanna Warner - Department for Energy Security and Net-Zero, Deputy Director, Net Zero Frameworks
  • Ben Smith - Department for Energy Security and Net-Zero - Deputy Director, Power CCUS
